Walter Thompson

Walter Thompson, 94, Grand Marais, died Tuesday August 29, 2017 at Ecumen Scenic Shores in Two Harbors.

Walt was born February 6, 1923 to Raymond C. and Bertha (Lubken) Thompson in Grand Marais, where he was a life-long resident. He was a decorated World War II Army veteran, awarded two Purple Hearts for his service in Europe. He fought in both the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed as a carpenter for many years with Carpenter’s Local 361 in Duluth, and later worked for the U. S. Forest Service.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and was a member of the NRA.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia Dickert; brothers, Donald, Cole, Raymond and Clarence, an infant brother; and his beloved cat, Susie.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Damora Thompson, and son Wiley (Connie) Thompson; grandchildren, Joseph (Kelly) and Rory (Beth) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Matt, Chris and Gabe Jones, Cedric Rock, Rebecca and Andrew Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais followed by burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.
