Walter John Skalsky – 101yrs 6mos 17 days, of Silver Bay, passed away on December 20, 2017 at Northern Pine Assisted Living Center in Pine City, MN.
He was born on June 3, 1916 to Andrew and Magdalena (Gascek) Skalski in Minneapolis, but grew up in Hibbing, MN and graduated from Hibbing High School in 1937. He married Margaret Jivery on September 6, 1941. Walter was a World War II veteran and served in the European Theater from 1942 until 1945 and was Chief of ground radar serving in France and Germany.
Upon his completion of service, Walt was employed as a plant supervisor for Reserve Mining in Silver Bay until his retirement in 1978.
Walter was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, walk, and camp. Upon retirement he and Margaret did a lot of traveling and spent 14 years in Texas during the winters.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1956 and the Knights of Columbus.
Walter was preceded in death by his, parents Andrew and Magdalena; wife, Margaret; 4 sisters Helen Stark, Ann Kuryatnik, Francis Wedge, and Stella Caliguri; brother, Eugene Skalsky; a niece; a nephew; and other relatives in Poland.
He is survived by daughter, Patricia (Donnie) Tucker of Red Wing, MN; 4 sons, Michael (Gwen) of Rush City, MN, Walter “Andy” (Connie) Silver Bay, MN, Charles (Claudia) of Carlton, MN, Jerry (Becky) of Forest Lake, MN; brother, John (Ardele) of Iron, MN; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great- grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; special nephews, Jerry Wedge; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Fairview Hospice and the nurses and staff at Northern Pines Assisted Living Center for their care and services to our loved one and our family. They went above and beyond our expectations.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay.
