Vernon L. Bolen, 89, of Two Harbors, died Friday January 2, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.
He was born June 4, 1925 to Roy and Hulde (Oberg) Bolen in Two Harbors where he grew up. Vern worked for the DM&IR Railroad before enlisting in the US Army. He served as a paratrooper and was stationed in the Occupation of Japan. Vern fought in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. He returned home in 1952, and one year later married Vivian Beck . Vern did auto body work, later worked for Erie Mining for many years, and also for the city of Two Harbors until his retirement. He was a member of the VFW, Loyal Order of Moose, American Legion, DAV, Kentucky Colonel’s Association, and was an active member of the DFL party, advocating for veterans’ rights. Vern enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Laurance.
Vern is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vivian, daughters, Vicki (Mike) Falk, and Valerie (Heather Pipes) Bolen; son, Jon; grandchildren, Faye (Brian) Linden, Tammy (Butch) Stanek, Amber (David) Oman, Nicole (Donovan) Robinson, and Joshua (Sundry) Bolen; great grandchildren, Chase, Hailey, Abigail, Anna, Dawson, and Emma; brothers, Donald (Lucille), James (Roxie), sisters, Cookie (Dave) Puent, and Lolly (Bob) Cavallin; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 PM until the 3 PM Memorial Service, Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Cavallin Funeral Home, with a social hour and supper to follow at the American Legion in the memorial room. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors at a later date.
