Tom Malmo, 90, Silver Bay, died Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay.
He was born February 4, 1927 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Son of Albin and Estelle Malmo, Tom grew up and attended schools in Duluth before graduating from Shattuck Military Academy. He served as a Navy corpsman attached to the Marines during the Occupation of Japan in 1945 and was deployed a second time in 1950 during the Korean War. He served in and survived the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.
Tom returned to Duluth and was employed selling medical supplies at the family business. He was married to Ruth Lucille “Lucy” Cottington in 1951 and together they moved to Silver Bay in 1955 where they opened Malmo Drugstore, which he operated until his retirement in 1987. He was passionate about Silver Bay and the North Shore. He was a strong supporter of the community, the park and rec department and high school sports. Tom was always lending a helping hand to anyone in need whether he knew them or not.
During his retirement Tom volunteered countless hours at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay and was often driving veterans to appointments in Superior and Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, and his wife, Lucy in 2013. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth "Beth" and Thomas Teeters of Owatonna, MN, and Paula and Ralph Romano of Duluth, MN; son, Timothy Malmo of Rosemount, MN; grandchildren MaryBeth Teeters Swanson (John David), Melissa Teeters, Christopher Teeters (Lindsay), Allison Romano Asfahl (Matthew), and Ryan Romano (Meagan); great-grandchildren Liam, Theodore, and Hadley Teeters, John Thomas "JT", Isaac, and Luke Swanson, and Roman, Makenzie, and Stella Asfahl.
Visitation will be from 9 AM until the 10 AM memorial service on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Duluth.
The family is so grateful for the love, care, honor and respect he received during his time at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay.
