August 30, 1917 — July 16, 2014

Sylvia A. Haavisto 96, of Grand Marais, past away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in the Cook County North Shore Care Center.

She was born August 30, 1917 to Albert and Sophia Helmerson in Grand Marais. Sylvia grew up on Good Harbor Hill in Grand Marais, and attended and graduated from Cook County High School. She was a lifelong resident of Grand Marais, except for three years that she spent in Florida. Sylvia was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a past member of the Young Old Timers Club. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Axel; son, Curtis; sisters, Margaret Krause, and Zelda Santwire; brothers, Harry and Norman; and son-in-law, Russell Brickman.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Karen Brickman, Elaine (Frank) Rabold, Kathy (Scott) Steinbach all of Grand Marais; granddaughters, Kelly (Shawn) Swearingen, Kim (Tom) Kerntz, Jeni (Ryan) Bockovich, and Amber (Steve) Roduner; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Peterson; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 12 Noon until the 1 PM Memorial Service on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery.
