Silva Kahl
July 28, 1962 — July 15, 2012
Silva Mara Kahl, age 49, of Duluth, MN passed away at the Solvay Hospice House on Sunday July 15, 2012.
She was born on July 28, 1962 in Eveleth, MN. A 1980 graduate of Tower Sudan H.S., attended Luther College, Decorah, IA, the University of Wisconsin- Superior, Superior, WI (B.S. with honors in History) 2006 and Indiana University, Bloomington, IN (M.A. in History) 2012. Silva lived in Biwabik and Tower, Lake Vermillion until her marriage in 1983 and was a resident of Duluth Township until her death.
Silva was a librarian at St Michael Lakeside School, employed at Gabriel's Bookstore, St Michael Parish and owned and operated Windever Books, a quality, used bookstore in Duluth, MN.
She was Miss Tower Soudan in 1980 and the recipient of the Colby Scholarship. She enjoyed travelling, music, literature and historical and religious writings; an avid reader and collector of books.
Silva was a loving daughter, wife and mother. Her love of thought provoking text was surpassed only by the love for her family. She enjoyed fervent discussions on social, religious and political issues with family, friends and colleagues. Her raw and often blunt commentary will be truly missed.
Silva is survived by her husband Michael; two daughters Jenny Kahl (Ben Carlson), White Bear Lake, MN, Emily Kahl, Minneapolis, MN; two sons, Sever and Grant Kahl, Duluth, MN; parents, Frank and Roberta Sever, Tower, MN; a sister, Mari Malzahn, and a niece and nephew, Amber and Jason Malzahn, Arlington Heights, IL.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of the oncology and radiology departments of Essentia Health. A very special thanks to Dr. Mihailo Lalich for his wonderful care and guidance during her treatment. Thank you to the St. Mary's Hospice and the Solvay Hospice House for providing her comfort and excellent care.
Visitation will be from 6 PM until 8 PM Tuesday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM Wednesday July 18, 2012 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Duluth. Burial will follow at Lakeview Palmers Cemetery
