RICHARD "DICK" GILBERTSEN
Richard J. Gilbertsen left this life peacefully after battling congestive heart failure and pneumonia, at St. Mary's Hospital/Hospice in Duluth, on November 16th, 2011.
"Dick" was born April 26th, 1930, to Ann and Ardeen Gilbertsen of Grand Marais, Minnesota. He grew up on Maple Hill and graduated from high school in 1948. Dick soon went to work for the Cook County News Herald, working in the print shop, but left for 2 years to join the Army, during the Korean War. After serving his country, Dick returned to work for the newspaper, and put in over 40 years with the News Herald before retiring in 1995.
He enjoyed his retirement; his hobbies included fishing, gardening, reading, and volunteering his time at the Historical Society. In 2009, Dick sold the family home on Maple Hill and moved to the Homestead Co-op to be closer to town and his favorite coffee shop: The Bluewater Cafe.
He was an active member at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and participated in bible study class there in recent years.
Dick is survived by his younger sister Barbara Cashman, and his nephew and nieces; Mark, Robin and Ann, who all live in the greater Seattle area. Dick was a kind and gentle spirit and will be missed very much by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, November 21, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais.
