Richard Carroll

It is with loving hearts we announce Richard H. Carroll has gone to be with the Lord.
Richard was born to Florence and Richard Carroll Sr. in Battle Creek, Michigan on September 25, 1926 and died on November 26, 2011 surrounded by his family.
Richard proudly served our country and fought for our freedom from 1946-1954 in the United States Army/ Air Force, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His travels brought him to many parts of the United States, but also included time in the Philippines and Japan. He had the opportunity to meet President Harry Truman and General McArthur during his active duty service.
Richard's greatest love and dedication was to his family with whom he enjoyed building wonderful family memories, camping and fishing his entire life, and toasting smores by the campfire. Richard was an avid golfer, a great coffee club member, and an outstanding wood craftsman. He had a passion for the City of Silver Bay, and missed it dearly after moving to Duluth. Richard worked for and retired from Reserve Mining Company after 35 years, but also worked at the credit union and Tettegouche and Gooseberry State Parks.
As a volunteer, he dedicated hundreds of hours to the Veteran's Association in Silver Bay, and volunteered driving many people to their medical appointments. Richard was a very active member of the United Protestant Church, serving on the church council, as head usher, and as deacon. He was known as the man with the Tootsie Pops at church.
He is preceded in death by his mother Florence, father Richard Sr., and brother Don.
Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty (Sanford) Carroll; four blessed daughters, Linda (Ken) Skaaren of Bemidji, Carolyn (Kurt) Roller of Superior, Ricki (Mike) Conley of Proctor, and Heidi (Daryl) Kadrmas of Superior; 8 grandchildren; 10 beautiful great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Carroll of Battle Creek, MI and Jack Carrol of Martinsville, IN; and sisters, Connie Parsons and Eva Moldenhauer of Battle Creek and Sharon Heidenrich of Colombia, TN.
Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the 1:30 PM Memorial Service on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay.
