Two Harbors

Norman Vollmer of Two Harbors, Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 17, 2019 in the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay. His death was just 18 days after the passing of Donna, his wife of 68 years. He was 93 years old.

Norman was born February 23, 1926 to Melvin and Martha (Bohrer) Vollmer in Mannhaven, North Dakota. In 1939, the family moved to Illinois. Norman graduated from Marissa High School in Illinois in 1943. From 1944 to 1946 he served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS White Plains and the USS Suwanee.

On February 17, 1951, Norman married Donna Reeves in Peoria, Illinois.  The Vollmers moved to Cottage Grove, Minnesota where Norman was employed at Armor Meat Packing. The family then moved to Two Harbors, where they owned and operated Halcyon Harbor Resort (Cliff House Restaurant) for many years. Norm also worked for Kaiser Engineering and was a realtor. He took great pride in being part of many substantial construction projects around the country, including the Two Harbors breakwater, the ore docks, and Reserve Mining in Silver Bay. He was an active and dedicated member of Hope Lutheran and Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church.  Besides working, Norman loved snowmobiling, fishing and the great outdoors.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Donna. Also, preceding him in death was his sister Agnes (Vollmer) Hussey, brother Iver Vollmer, and daughter -in-law Carol (Burns) Vollmer. He is survived by two sons, Keith Vollmer of Two Harbors, Minnesota and Steve Vollmer of Savage, Minnesota; his daughter and son-in-law Linda and Jim Deputy of Tucson, Arizona; four grandchildren, Josh Vollmer, Chad Vollmer, Collin Deputy and Chase Deputy; sister, Arlyne Jones; and brother,  John Vollmer.

This faith-filled man will be greatly missed. A celebration of Norman and Donna Vollmer’s life will be announced and held at a later date.
