Naomi Nelson

Naomi Nelson, 79, of Two Harbors left this Earth Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation in Duluth.

She was born on February 13, 1938 to Walter and Thelma (Nichless) Nelson in Two Harbors, where she grew up and attended school.  It was there that she met the love of her life Richard (Dick) Nelson. They were married by her young age of sixteen. Shortly after, they started their family together.  By 1958, they loaded up the car along with their first three children (Kristy, Shari, and Brenda) and headed for sunny skies in Phoenix, AZ. There they completed their family with three more children (Mark, Tim, and Marlys).

Naomi was a devoted stay-at-home mother, but was also passionate about women aglow and her bible study teachings.  Once all the children were grown and had left the nest, Naomi and Dick headed home for Two Harbors. After moving back, they spent many more wonderful years together in their cozy white house on Seventh Street.

However, in 2010 they moved into Barrows House due to Naomi being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. With the aggressive progression of the disease she later moved into Chris Jensen.

Dick preceded her in death in summer of 2015. She is survived by her six children, Kristy (Randy) Fields in Tucson, AZ; Shari Nelson and Brenda Thein in Prescott Valley; Mark Nelson in Phoenix, AZ; Tim (Donna) Nelson in Thief River Falls, MN; and Marlys (Steve) Parks in Camp Verde, AZ. Along with her brother Russell  and sister-in-law Delores (Dolly) Nelson. Naomi was blessed with eleven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She loved having her grandkids stay for summers in Two Harbors.

For many, Naomi will never be forgotten because they own one of her quilts, afghans (or af-a-ghans as she would pronounce it), baby blankets, or some of her crocheted washcloths. Her sewing creativity was unequaled, her special ladies-day luncheons were perfection, her singing comparable to an angel, and her ministry brought many to know Christ. Those of us who were touched by Naomi will miss her terribly, but we are relieved to know that she is final home with the Lord where she’s always dreamed of being.

Visitation will be held from 2 PM until the 3 PM service on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Two Harbors.
