Mildred Thoreson

January 23, 1930 — June 29, 2014

Mildred Thoreson, 84, Grand Marais, died Sunday June 29, 2014 at Cook County North Shore Hospital.

She was born on January 23, 1930 in St. Louis County River District to George and Lilean (Waananen) Potter. Millie grew up on the Iron Range and the North Shore of Lake Superior, attending schools in Hovland and Grand Marais. She was a self taught pianist, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, accordion, and violin. She also enjoyed traveling with Edwin in the U.S., South America, Africa, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Mildred was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, played the organ, played handbells, was church historian, and took part in the quilting group. She was also a member of the American Cancer Society, the Garden Club, Housing and Redevelopment Authority, Symphonian Club, the Historical Society, and the government study, Operation Skywatch, summer of 1952.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Edwin E. Thoreson, and a daughter, Wendy W. Yecoshenko; brother, Merle Potter; and dear friend Vic Dunder.

She is survived by her daughter, Randi (Rick) Nelson; three grandsons, Jason (Lori) Yecoshenko, Peter Yecoshenko, and Esten Nelson; great-grandchildren, Fayth, Kristianna, and Brock Yecoshenko, Ashtyn and Brooklyn Nelson; sisters, Pat Holte, Marge Nelson, and Honey (Tom) Eliasen; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the North Shore Health Care Foundation.

Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Thursday July 3, 2014 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Hovland.
