Maria Ostman, 93, formerly of Finland, died Thursday, September 17, 2020 at St. Anthony Health Center.
She was born January 26, 1927 to Joseph and Gina (Damiani) Jakovcic in Porec, Yugoslavia, where she grew up and attended school. She arrived in the U. S. on May 17, 1955 at New York City aboard the Andrea Doria. Three days later she arrived in Beaver Bay and in 1959 she moved to Tettegouche where she was employed as a caretaker for C.K. Quinn. When Mr. Quinn moved to California, she moved with him. Maria married Rudolph “Babe” Ostman Jr. on January 22, 1972 in California and after Mr. Quinn’s death, Maria and Babe moved to Finland. Maria enjoyed gardening, feeding deer and hummingbirds, fishing, and hunting. She was a member of the Eastern Star.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rudolph; a brother, Santo; and a daughter, Elia Nelson.
Maria is survived by her son-in-law, Allen Nelson of Cedar; grandsons, Michael, Mark, Chad, Allen, and Chris; and several great-grandchildren.
A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held from 1 Pm to 4 Pm on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Crystal Bay Cemetery, Finland.
