Magnus C. “Chic” Nelson Jr., 89, Isabella, died Monday, January 4, 2021 in the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay.
Chic was born May 30, 1931, the oldest of five children, to Magnus and Edna (Randall) Nelson Sr. in Wadena. In 1948 he moved to Isabella to work as a logger, then entered the Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War. Chic achieved the rank of Corporal, serving with the 868 Field Battalion on “Atomic Annie.” A 280mm nuclear cannon. He and Ruth married in 1952, and made their home at the logging camps in Sawbill Landing before moving to Isabella in 1968. He worked on the construction of the plant in Silver Bay, and worked for a short time at the plant, before returning to the woods. Chic was employed by Holden Logging for over 30 years. He also served as Stony River Township Supervisor for several terms.
Chic was known for his quick wit and one-liners- GAWD-dammit! He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, music, and dancing.
Chic was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; brother, Clair, and sister, Tina Kimball.
He is survived by his sons, Jerry, Rob (Karen), Jon “Jack” (Theresa); daughters, Caroline “Lynn” (Floyd) Housey, Barb (Gordon) Thorne, Tracy (Scott) Stadler, and Anita (Rhonda) Nelson; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren with another on the way; brothers, Stan (Judy) and Kenny (Shirley); and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to the staff of the Minnesota Veteran’s Home for their loving care over the last 7 years. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Veteran’s Home or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Private services were held. A public Celebration of Life will be held, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 29, 2021 beginning at 1 PM at the Isabella Community Center.
