Lilas E. Nickel, 94, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, October 12, 2011 in the Barross House.
She was born January 8, 1917 to Ernest and Lena (Werner) Hoehne in Lamberton, Minnesota where she grew up and attended school. She married Kermit Nickel in 1937 and together they farmed in Sanborn, Minnesota for several years. After living for a short time in California, they moved to the Minneapolis area where they provided foster care for over 20 children, then lived in Annandale and Moorhead. While living in Moorhead, Kermit and Lilas were active in the Senior Citizen Group and enjoyed their friends there. After Kermit's death in 1999, Lilas moved to Two Harbors to be near her family. Lilas enjoyed fishing, traveling with Kermit and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Kermit; a son, Ralph; and brothers, Orva and Milton Hoehne.
Lilas is survived by her daughter, Jan Nickel of Two Harbors; grandchildren, Dusty (Cathy Dugger) Bjornstad and Lisa (Paul) Berndt; great-grandchildren - Madisyn Bjornstad, Samantha and Tyler Berndt; step-greatgrandsons, Bradley, Brandon and Bryan Dugger; a sister-in-law, Mildred Nickel; and several nephews.
