Larry G. Ryden

Ryden’s Border Store

“Larry did not die from wine, women or song.”

Larry Ryden, 74, of Florida and Canada, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October 18, 2016 from a rare form of cancer at his daughter’s home in Grand Portage, MN.

Larry graduated from Grand Marais High School (now Cook County) in 1960.  He joined the Navy three months after graduating.  During his time he sailed to the North Pole and the South Pole twice.  In 1964 he returned home to log with his brothers and helped his parents with the border store.  Larry moved to Seattle and worked for Boeing, then moved to Duluth and sold furniture at Goldfine’s.  He finally returned home in 1973, and bought Ryden’s Border Store from his parents.  He also owned a commercial salmon fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska.

Larry retired at the young age of 49 and travelled the world extensively.  He ended up settling in his favorite places, his home in the Florida Keys and his fishing camp at English River, Ontario.  Larry was very active-fishing, hunting, working out, and playing pickle ball.  He enjoyed the occasional cocktail, and truly enjoyed people and life.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Mabel Ryden and a brother Darrell.

Larry will be greatly missed by his children, Lori “Sam” (Mike) Boomer and Cory Ryden, first wife Dorothy (Larry)  Eliasen and four beautiful grandchildren, Brea and Kale Boomer and Taylor and Raina Ryden.  His siblings Pete (Phyllis) Ryden, Joy, (Joe) Carlson and Clyde Ryden and Darrell’s wife Annemarie.   Lucy (his companion of 25 years) and her daughter Marguerite, and many nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sampson and the staff at the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and the North Shore Hospital for their support and care during this difficult time.

If so desired memorials may be sent to Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais MN, at 4:00 pm Monday October 24th, 2016 followed by a lunch social time at the Grandma-Rays (Old Legion).
