His heart was tired; our hearts are broken.
Johnathan Wesley Smith, “Augo,” 58, of Grand Marais died Saturday, October 30, 2021 at North Shore Health.
John was born November 10, 1962 to Wesley “Bud” and Mary Eve (Beckwith) Smith in Grand Marais. He was a 1981 graduate of Cook County High School and was a lifelong resident of Cook County. It is the only place he ever called home.
He started working at a young age, logging in the woods with his father. He also worked for Superior National Forest, Como Oil & Propane, the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino, American Legion Post 413 and most recently, Cook County Towing. He was also self-employed by deer processing and firearm sales and service.
Even through the years of health issues, he still stayed active. He loved the fall and the start of deer hunting. Every year he was out there shooting with his dad’s gun. Augo also loved fur trapping, trap shooting, fishing and camping.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Mary; an infant sister; his first wife, Kathy Johnson; and his beloved dachshund Ellie Mae, who was by his side for 17 years.
John is survived by his son, Michael and wife, Andrea; soul mate Darleen Irving; half-brothers and their wives, Scott and Judy, Todd and Patsy, Rocky and Crystal; many special aunts and uncles, cousins, classmates, and close friends.
The family would like to thank all the medical providers that helped him through the years of his heart journey. His heart was tired; our hearts are broken.
Service will be held Thursday, November 4 at 11 a.m. at the Cornerstone Church in Grand Marais. Services will be livestreamed through the Cornerstone Facebook page.
