John Turonie, Sr., 98, Silver Bay, died March 8, 2019 at his home at Carefree Living.
He was born on June 14, 1920 to Andrew and Anna (Turney) Turonie in Mellen, Wisconsin. John served in the U. S. Army 3rd Armored Division during World War II, and after his discharge returned to Wisconsin. He married Evelyn Hicken on October 5, 1946 and they moved to Silver Bay in 1954. John was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Reserve Mining Company until retiring in 1983.
John was a charter member of United Protestant Church in Silver Bay, and the Silver Bay Golf Club. He enjoyed music, guitar, golf, cross-country skiing, woodworking, and “his beloved Green Bay Packers”.
John was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn; a brother, Michael and sisters, Anna and Mary.
John is survived by a son, John (Patricia) Turonie Jr. of McGregor; a daughter, Melodee Helgason of Ft. McMurray, Alberta, CA; grandchildren, Andrea, Andrew, Winston, Cynthia and Renee; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathryn and Helen; and family friend, Dawn Connor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Bay Area Partners, Silver Bay.
The family would like to extend their heartful thanks to the staff at Carefree Living for their loving and compassionate care.
Visitation will be from 1:30 PM until the 2:30 PM service on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay.
