John Carr

April 3, 1925 — December 1, 2010

John W. "Jack" Carr, 85, passed away at home on Wednesday December 1, 2010. He was born on April 3, 1925 in St. Paul, MN to John and Astrid (Megard) Carr. He attended school in St. Paul and Two Harbors. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and served 4 years with two tours of overseas duty in World War II. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for service on Guadalcanal and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and Bronze Star for service on the British Solomon Islands. He also saw action on Midway, Efate, New Hebredes, and Tulagi. After the war he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. In 1947 he went to work for the D.M.I.R. Railroad as a brakeman, retiring in 1985. He married Eleanor Swenson in June of 1948 at Concordia Church in Minneapolis and they had 62 A� great years together. He remained in the Marine Corps reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean War in January 1951 and was in North Carolina until September of 1951. He started Carr T.V. and Appliances in 1954 and operated the business until he retired in 1985. Jack was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose Club, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, AAD Temple, Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, Marine Corps Aviation. Jack loved the woods, camping, skiing, traveling, and spending time with family. He instilled a sense of adventure in all of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parent and two special uncles, Luther and William Megard.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 62 A� years Eleanor; sons John (Marion) Carr, Mike (Becky) Carr, Dan (Mary) Carr all of Two Harbors; daughter Lynette (Johnnie) Simmons of Mora, MN; seven grandchildren Heather (Dain) Swanson, James (Jessica) Carr, Marc Carr, Brian (Carra) Carr, Jarl Olin, Felicia Simmons, and Amanda Carr; 3 great-grandchildren Conner, Jocelyn, and Ethan. We will miss him. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors, in the Veteran's section.
