Jessie Carlson

December 22, 1925 — August 9, 2011

Jessie E. Carlson 85, of Two Harbors, died peacefully, Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at her home.

She was born December 22, 1925 to William and Ossie (Rook) Shewell in Portland, Indiana, where she grew up. In 1940, she moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, where she graduated from Storm Lake High School. Jessie graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, with a BA in social studies. She then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and graduated with a BS degree. Jessie taught at Two Harbors High School until she married in June of 1956. She stayed home to raise her family until she was hired by Harcourt Brace in 1968, where she worked until her retirement in January of 1988.

Jessie was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Women of the Moose, American Legion Women's Auxiliary, and Vasa Lodge. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and traveling through Europe.

Jessie is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Shewell, and great-granddaughter, Josephine.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Kim (Bruce) Ziegler, William (Philomenia) Carlson, and Kristina (Bruce) Peterson; grandchildren, Steven (Daniela), Matthew (Kieree), Victoria, Jarrod (Beth), Al (Kimmy), Jaclyn (Ryan), Darren, Justin (Susan), and Jeremy (Jessica); 4 great-grandchildren; nephew, Thomas (Rhonda) Shewell, niece, Connie (Mike) Shewell-Kahnke; and sister-in-law, Marge Shewell.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Jessie.

Visitation will be from 11 AM until the 12 Noon Service, Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Cavallin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, with lunch to follow at the Two Harbors Moose Lodge.
