Irene Thompson, 85, Grand Marais, died Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Ecumen Scenic Shores in Two Harbors, just two days after the death of her beloved husband, Walter.
Irene was born February 28, 1932 to Alfred and Mabel (Berglund) Saethre in Grand Marais, where she was a life-long resident. After graduating from high school, she graduated from UMD and later Bob Jones University with a Master’s Degree in music. She was employed as a music teacher at Cook County High School for many years, and taught private music lessons.
A career musician, she played at various churches and music events in the community. She was also an accomplished seamstress, artist and gardener.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter; brothers and sisters, Roland, Olive, Lyle, Carolyn, and Russell; and her beloved cat, Susie.
She is survived by a daughter, Damora Thompson, and son Wiley (Connie) Thompson; grandchildren, Joseph (Kelly) and Rory (Beth) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Matt, Chris and Gabe Jones, Cedric Rock, and Rebecca and Andrew Thompson; brothers, Dale (Dale) Saethre, Chester Lindskog and Roy Lindskog; sisters, Eleanor Waha, and Lorraine McDonald; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais, followed by burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.
