Gladys Lorntson

Gladys Lorntson, 77, Silver Bay, died Saturday December 15, 2012 at Ecumen Scenic Shores in Two Harbors.

Gladys was born March 24, 1935 to Frederick and Alma (Gossell) Holm in Englewood, Colorado. At the age of three, they moved to Bartil Township, Minnesota, and then to Aldrich, Minn., where she attended school through the sixth grade. She graduated from high school in Verndale in 1953. Gladys attended Concordia College in Saint Paul, and later graduated from UMD with an Associate's degree. She married Harvey Markley in 1954 and they had 6 children. She married James Lorntson in 1979. Gladys owned and operated two H&R Block offices in Two Harbors and Silver Bay, and did bookkeeping for various businesses.

She was a member and volunteer of Faith Lutheran Church of Silver Bay, AARP, Bay Historical Society, treasurer for Luther Women's Missionary League and went to all conventions. She also was bookkeeper for Steps of Faith Daycare, and was nominated Outstanding Woman Senior Citizen Volunteer of Lake County for 2012.

Gladys enjoyed reading, painting crafts, needle point, quilting with the ladies at church, church activities and bible studies, and guild and volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lorntson in 2008; parents; and step-father, Harold Sommars; and sister, Dorothy Grewe.

Gladys is survived by daughter, Brenda Hurtt M.D. (Rev. David Hurtt) of Fairbault; son, Brian Markley of Brooklyn Center; daughter, Ruth (Dan) Maki of Beaver Bay; daughter, Karen Markley of Silver Bay; son, Eric (Lisa) Markley of Brooklyn Park; daughter, Cathy Miller of Long Lake; step-daughters, Dr. Paulette (Randy) Robinson of Dunkirk, MD, Debi Stein of Indianapolis, IN, Jacqueline (Thomas) Furness of Fishers, IN, and Nancy (Eddie) Wadda of Lander, WY; sister, Marjorie Rach of Wadena; brother, Charles (Sharon) Holm of Alexandria; brother-in-law, Helmer Grewe of Deer Creek; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Faith Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Beaver Bay Cemetery.
