George M. Salakka, 80, of Knife River, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital with family by his side.
He was born September 6, 1929 to Andrew and Eva (Jussila) Salakka in Knife River. George grew up in Knife River and attended school there and in Two Harbors. He worked on the family farm since he was a youngster, and later worked for the DM&IR Railroad, and then as a carpenter for various construction companies for over 60 years. He married Delores Waldron on November 25, 1949 in Two Harbors, and they raised their family in Knife River. George was a member of the Carpenters Union #361. In 2008, he attended FinnFest and was very happy to see the president of Finland. He loved music and played many instruments, and even made a record. George also enjoyed woodworking, playing cribbage, and watching the deer. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Waino, Andrew, Rawland and Arnold; and sisters, Esther Pelander, Sylvia Bolen, Helvie Midbrod, and Norma and Aileen Salakka; granddaughter, Aime Leigh Jackson, and great-granddaughter, Caydence Carl.
He is survived by wife of 60 years, Delores; children, Mike, Laurie (David) Jackson, Teresa Salakka, Marjie Van Cleave, and JoLynn (Matt) Bailey; son-in-law, Mike Van Cleave; grandchildren, Marissa and Miranda Jackson, Tim, Andrew, and Krystin Van Cleave, Callyn, Alex, and Ava Bailey; great-grandson, McKinley Carl; sister, June (Marvin) Benson; and many nieces and nephews

Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM Memorial Service Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Knife River Lutheran Church.
