George Saari, 80, of Two Harbors, died Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Ecumen Scenic Shores.
He was born on March 7, 1934 to William and Edith (Beck) Saari in Bassett Township, where he grew up and attended school. As a young man he worked on the family farm before going to work for the D. M. & I. R. Railroad. He served in the Army between World War II and the Korean War, then returned home and to his job on the railroad, retiring as a crane operator with over 45 years of service.
A proud Finn, George enjoyed his time outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and gardening.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Gladys Hellman and Betty Lou Udenberg, and a brother, Fran Saari.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, Robert (Sandra) of Georgia and Forrest of Two Harbors; daughters, Colleen (Mike) Highland and Katie Saari (Mike Hein) of Two Harbors, and Helen Saari (Shiloh Boman) of Silver Bay, and Marilee of Kentucky; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews he loved; and his faithful companion, PeeWee.
Services will be held at 11 AM Friday May 16, 2014 at Bassett Town Hall in Brimson. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
