George Jess Asmussen, 92, of Silver Bay, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 29, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital.
George was born June 28, 1929 to Jess and Valorise Asmussen in Rice Lake, Wisconsin and grew up working at the family farm and resort. In 1948 George joined the U. S. Army and served in the Korean War, where he was thrice wounded. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Oak Leaf Clusters.
On August 15, 1951 George married Patricia Michna in Rice Lake and together they moved to Camp Carson, Colorado where he completed his military service. After his discharge, they returned to Rice Lake and started their family.
In 1956 George and Pat moved their growing family to the booming town of Silver Bay, wher he was employed by Reserve Mining Company until the 1986 plant closing. He later worked for the U. S. Forest Service, and was self-employed in the junk and scrap business. In 1987 at the age of 58, George earned his GED.
George enjoyed playing cards, guns, hunting, fishing, sunrises, his dogs and his family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; a son, John; his parents; brothers, Eldon and Peter; and sister, Grace Kramer.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Mike) Schultz and Julie Beloy; daughter-in-law, Beth Asmussen; sons, David (Patty), Daniel, and Jeffrey; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren; and his faithful dog, Rascal, who was by his side when he passed.
The family would like to thank the staffs of North Shore Area Partners, St. Luke’s Home Health, Moments Hospice, Lake View Memorial Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Lake County Ambulance, Silver Bay Clinic, Silver Bay Pharmacy, and Silver Bay Police Dept. We would like to give a special thanks to his friends, Vicki Baker and Crystal Peterson for their love and care for George through the years.
Memorials are preferred to the Silver Bay Foodshelf or the Disabled Veterans of America.
Visitation will be from 11AM until the Noon Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Burial will take place at at later date at Mikana, Wisconsin.
