Erland Nathanial Shold, of Grand Marais died Monday, January 22, 2024, at North Shore Health.
He was born on December 16, 1923, to Andrew and Esther Alfreda (Backlund) Shold in Grand Marais where he was a lifelong resident. He entered the world as a three-pound preemie and was placed in a shoe box by the wood stove (the early incubator). He survived being accidentally run over by a truck as a young child and being hit in the head by a log as an adult, requiring brain surgery. He died at the age of 100 years, one month, and six days.
Erland graduated high school in Grand Marais and attended Bethel College. He worked loading logs on ships in the Grand Marais harbor, independent trucking, worked for a time (1964) in Anchorage AK, and drove trucks for Hedstrom Lumber until his retirement.
Erland loved the Lord, and for many years traveled to Mount Rose Chapel in Grand Portage to assist Ed Viren in his missionary work on the reservation. He was a member of First Baptist Church (now Cornerstone Church). His life demonstrated his love for the Lord, and his family and friends.
Erland was a member of the NRA and an avid MN Vikings fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and picking berries. He loved to bake chocolate chip cookies and saffron bread, which he readily shared with family and friends. He, however, would not disclose the secret location of his favorite fishing hole.
Erland was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Rueben, Lloyd, Lester, Roger, and David; sisters, Bernice Howard, Betty Brummer, and Fern Lovaas; nephews Wesley Shold, Marvin Shold, and Stanley Shold; and brothers-in-law Ade Brummer, Robert Howard, Donald Lovaas, and Kenneth Lovaas.
He is survived by a brother, Walden (Gail) Shold; a sister, Ruth Lovaas; and thirty-eight nieces and nephews and their families.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of North Shore Living for their kindness and care for Erland over the past several years.
Service will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Cornerstone Church with interment at Poplar Grove Cemetery. To share a memory or leave an online condolence visit www.cavallinfuneralhome.com.
