Ellen M. Olson

Ellen M. “Elly” Olson, 84, of Grand Portage died on Monday, April 8, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Elly was born September 22, 1939, to Glen and Ada (Brown) Deremo in Cloquet and grew up and attended schools in McGregor. As a young lady she moved to Hovland to work as a cook at a resort on McFarland Lake, and later worked at Ryden’s Border store, the Radisson Grand Portage, Grand Portage Lodge, school, and Trading Post. She moved to Alaska with Ray Olson for several years, where she worked as a waitress, as a cook on the crab boats, and fished salmon with Ray. They returned to Grand Portage in 1980 and married in 1981.

Elly enjoyed camping, berry picking, gardening, crafting, and 4-wheeling.

Elly was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ginger, and a baby girl.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ray; their fur baby, Coconut; a sister, Kathy Overstreet; a step-daughter, Debbie; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday April 23, 2024, at Mt. Rose Community Church in Grand Portage, followed by burial in Sunset Cemetery, and a lunch at the Community Center.  To share a memory or leave an online condolence visit www.cavallinfuneralhome.com.
