Edward M. Hynes, 96, of Silver Bay died Monday, February 26, 2024 at Carefree Living.
He was born Nov. 11, 1927 in Minneapolis to Joseph E. and Monica (Cunningham) Hynes. He graduated from St. James Academy in Grand Forks N.D. in 1945. Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served at the Bremerton Navy Yard in Washington state. After his discharge from the Navy in July of 1946, he enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard. His Guard Unit was activated in September of 1950. Ed served as cadre at Ft. Lewis, Washington. In September of 1951, Ed was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Upon release from the Army in July of 1952, he worked for the DM & IR Railroad in Proctor for four years as a clerk.
In 1956, he married Lois June Stotesbery and started work at Reserve Mining Co. in Silver Bay, first in the Accounting Department and then in the Purchasing Department, retiring in 1986.
Ed was an honorable life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4469, past Faithful Navigator of the McGolrick Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a life member of Disabled American Veterans and VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois in 2016; and siblings, Katherine and Mary.
Ed and Lois had two children, Lezlie Hynes of Woodbury and Michael (Jeani) of Blaine who survive him. He is also survived by a sister, Joan and a large extended family.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Carefree Living and Essentia Hospice for the care they provided. And a special thank you to Ed and Lois’ dear friends and neighbors for their support through the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery.
