David Battaglia

January 21, 1931 — February 1, 2017

David P. Battaglia, 86, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017 in St. Luke’s Hospital with his family at his side.

Dave was born on January 21, 1931 to Dominic and Mary (Polga) Battaglia in Buhl, where he grew up and attended school.  He attended Virginia Junior College and received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University.   Dave moved to Two Harbors in 1953 and was employed as a civics and industrial arts teacher at Two Harbors High School until retiring in 1991. He was first elected Mayor in 1957, served on the Two Harbors City Council and again as Mayor until 1976 when he was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, serving for 18 years.  Dave again served on the Two Harbors City Council from 1997 to 2004.

Dave was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Loyal Order of Moose, where he was a Past Governor.

He enjoyed woodworking, carving, cooking, especially Italian food, Facetime with his family, and his morning coffee group.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rosemary Braun.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; sons, Dan (Laurie) of Askov, Dave (Nancy) of Cloquet, Mike (Doreen) of Duluth; daughters, Mary (Tony) Zehrer of Melrose; and Lisa Battaglia of Northfield; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Ray Battaglia; sisters, Jody Battaglia, Theresa Sullivan, and Toni Linville; aunt, Rose Bayuk; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 PM until the 7 PM Rosary Service on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Cavallin Funeral Home.  Visitation will continue from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 11 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
