Clyde Hedin

April 29, 1920 — January 20, 2015

Clyde Melvin Hedin, 94, of Two Harbors, MN, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at Ecumen Care Center in Two Harbors.  He was born to Gustaf and Lena Hedin on April 29, 1920, and grew up in Silver Creek. He worked several years with his father in the logging and lumber business.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving for four years.  He served in the Medical Corps., in England, just prior to the Battle of the Bulge.

He married Kathryn Olson in 1947.  He worked as a custodian and chief engineer at Two Harbors High School for 32 years, retiring in 1982.  He enjoyed driving cars for Benna Ford for many years.  He was a member and former trustee of the United Church, Past Commander & member of the Executive Board of the American Legion Post 109, charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars #4454, and former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.  He was a member and former treasurer of the Göta Lejon #251 Vasa Lodge & Trustee for the MN District #7 Vasa Lodge.

He enjoyed traveling the U.S. from coast to coast and a memorable trip to Sweden.  Hosting family gatherings at his home and cabin on Thomas Lake was a joy.  He was the founder and creator of the infamous annual fish cake party.  His weekly trips to Duluth shopping for a bargain with his wife, daughters and granddaughters- along with lunch at the Old Country Buffet were definitely highlights.  Time spent gardening, woodworking and collecting antiques were some of his favorite hobbies.

His family meant the world to him.  He left a note that ended with, “I lived a good life ever after with my family who are all so good.  I love everyone- forever.”

He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn in 1994, daughter Julie Ann in 1970, and brother Edwin T. Hedin.

He is survived by his two daughters Sally (Alan) Walstad and Mary Lou (David) Johnson, of Two Harbors, four grandchildren- Richard Hein of Duluth, Michael Hein and family- Amanda, Hayden, & Tyler of Two Harbors, Gina (Scott) Kleive and family- Kalei, Parker & Devin of Duluth, Patti (Paul) Johnson and family- Keith & Kyle of Two Harbors; and sister, Lucille (Don) Bolen. He is also survived by many many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 23 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Cavallin Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service on Saturday, January 24 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Burial with Military Honors will be at Lakeview Cemetery. Lunch to follow at the church.
