Beacher W. Elam, 93, of Silver Bay died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay.
He was born October 13, 1920 in Bristol, Iowa. Beach grew up in Waltham, Minnesota and graduated from high school in Hayfield. He worked as a salesman for Wheeler Coal Company and as a mechanic before joining the Air Force. He served for 4 years teaching pilots how to instrument fly. He returned home and met Rose Carlin. They were married on January 21, 1947. In 1957, Beach began working as a welder for Reserve Mining Company and he moved his family to Silver Bay. He retired in 1983. For many years, he served on the County Rec Board and the Silver Bay Park and Rec Board. His starring achievement was the Silver Bay Marina.
Beach was a founding member of the Silver Beaver Rifle and Pistol Club, and the Silver Trail Riders. He also belonged to the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, the Moose, and the American Legion. Beacher enjoyed announcing at softball and youth hockey games, and was an avid fisherman and bow and rifle hunter.
Beacher is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and a sister.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rose; sons, Steve (Lou) and Bruce; daughters, Susan (Doug) Morrow, and Rebecca Vick; grandchildren, Michael (Tina)Elam, Patrick (Jessica)Elam, Amanda (Jim) Sorenson, Michelle Elam, and Benjamin Morrow; great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Jada, Blake, Aiden, Stella, and one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM Memorial Service Saturday June 21, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Silver Bay. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Silver Bay Minnesota Veterans Home.
