Audrey M. Carlson, 100, of Knife River, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 20, 2024 at Barross Cottage.
She was born February 18, 1924, to John and Gertie (Anderson) Sandwick in Two Harbors and was a life-long resident of Knife River. After graduating from high school in 1942, as a part of the war effort, she worked in Rockford, Illinois for a short time. She and Bertil married in 1943, and Audrey was a homemaker through the years, and later worked as a department manager at the Sears store in Duluth for 17 years. In her later years she worked as a hostess at Emily’s in Knife River until retiring on her 80th birthday.
Audrey was a long-time, faithful, and active member of Knife River Lutheran Church. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading, and gardening and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. For her 100th Birthday party, her family requested attendees wear Vikings Purple and Gold, and many did.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brother, Alice Hedin, Elvina Ross, Mabel Swanson, and Dick Sandwick; her husband, Bertil; a daughter Carol “Cookie” Heil; and sons, James and Gary Carlson.
She is survived by her son, Stephen (Carol) Carlson; a daughter, Julie Earl “Rocky” Stewart; daughter-in-law, Leslee Carlson; grandchildren, Christin (Brad), Kim, Jim (Janine), Joel (Kelley), Veronica (Mike), Jeff (Jessica), Mark, Aubree (Lane), and Lindsay (Tim); great-grandchildren, Sofia, Will, Jessica, Aaron, Jadon, Grace, Natalie, Cohen, Allison, Olivia, Carter, Orion, Trent, Abigale, Zachary, Emmy, Hannah, and Ethan; and one great-great-grandchild, Barrett.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Knife River Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
